I stumbled across Billy Winters Bar + Diner on a whistle-stop visit to Portland Bill, and decided to pop in for a drink and cake. After ordering said drink and cake, I saw how good the meals looked so decided to order hot food too… after all, who says cake isn’t an acceptable starter?!
Billy’s had a varied menu that featured a lot of healthy options, including both vegetarian and seafood-based dishes. You can order their burgers and baps in gluten free rolls, as well as brioche or ciabatta which is a nice extra. I ordered the not quite so healthy Billy’s Beef Dog with onions, fries, BBQ sauce and mustard from the specials board, whilst my friend opted for the chorizo bangers in a roll with fries – both of which definitely got our seal of approval! The roll was beautifully crispy on the outside, and the meat was clearly good quality.
I was also tempted by the wood-fired pizza, which someone else had and looked delicious, although the 48hr pulled meat of the day on a bap was also drawing me in.
The diner has a really lovely, relaxed atmosphere, and with it’s position right on the shingle beach it’s a popular spot for wind-surfers and locals who were taking advantage of it’s mussels and crab offerings. The staff also serve all meals on palm leaf plates with wooden cutlery as they are biodegradable, so it was almost like a cross between traditional American restaurant and eco Dorset surfhouse. All of the tables were full when we got there and there was a constant stream of people coming in – although if I was local, I would certainly be a regular Sunday visitor too…
In terms of facilities, they’ve roped off a section in the pay and display car park outside that is only for diners, but you do need to go in and get a ticket from the bar to be able to park for free. The book swap is a cute extra, and of course the beautifully decorated toilets – there’s even flamingo fairy lights! What more can you ask for?!
Thanks to the typical British weather, we unfortunately didn’t get to enjoy the outdoor seating area; there’s a number of picnic benches looking out over the sea, and Billy’s claim of being ‘one of the best views in Weymouth’ is quite understandable. I can see it being an absolutely fantastic place to spend a summer evening, especially if it’s cocktails are as good as the rest of the food…
